Best Online Guitar Lessons

Posted by in Articles

The Internet is chock full of guitar lessons.  While this is great, it’s hard to tell the difference between the best guitar lessons and the not-so-good stuff. All that competition out there is a good thing for me and you. The best online guitar lessons keep getting better, and I have spent countless hours testing  and reviewing literally dozens of online guitar courses.

So what did I find? These are my Top Picks for Best Online Guitar Lessons in 2012 -

The story of Guitar Tricks is an interesting one. Online since 1998 (before MP3s were around), Guitar Tricks was started by a guitar player named Jon Broderick. He started by putting up “learn guitar” videos on the Internet, and to his surprise they got tons of hits. He knew he was on to something…Fast forward over a decade, and they have over 45 instructors teaching hundreds of lessons in every style of music imaginable. From metal to ska to acoustic to you-name-it, there are HD videos from the world’s top guitar teachers.

You can spend as much or as little time as you want watching the videos and learning from these instructors. All the different teachers on the site keep it from getting dull.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jon last year, and he said something that really stuck with me:

“One thing we are really proud of is our courses. These are unique in the market,
shot as a full curriculum under guidance of MIT and Berkelee educated directors.

Each course is about 100 videos fully step by step, and they work together to
step you from ‘how do I hold a pick?’ to an intermediate level.
After that we have thousands of lessons
covering a wide variety of topics.
Everything from ‘b-bender guitar’ to ‘touch tapping.’ “

I literally got lost in GuitarTricks.com for days once I signed up to check it out. One of my favorite things is that it’s free to sign up, and you can get a full membership for $14.95 per month. That membership gives you access to everything, they hold nothing back.

After 20 years of playing guitar, and a few years owning this website and reviewing tons of guitar courses, GuitarTricks.com is (hands down) our Top Pick for the best online guitar lessons.

Jamorama is one if the best-known names in guitar instruction, and certainly some of the best online guitar lessons you will find online. Jamorama is more of a “step-by-step” guitar lesson package, and they have a lot of tools to help you along the way.

They have recently completed revamped their offering for 2010, and here are some of the things that make Jamorama extremely popular:

- 44 chapters and 252 pages of lessons
– Downloadable Step by Step Guitar Lessons
– Beginner to Advanced Skills Levels
– Learn to Read Music & Guitar Tab
– Over 12 Months worth of Lessons
– Comes with Chord & Progression Book
– Award winning and trusted Company

I like the videos in the Jamorama guitar course because it shows the guitar from three different angels at once: the teacher’s fingers, a graphic of the fretboard, and the teacher’s strumming hand. This gives you a complete view of what you need to be doing with your hands.

I would recommend Jamorama to anyone that is completely new to the guitar. The lessons are not strictly beginner guitar lessons, but they do start with the basics. You will be comforted if you’ve never played guitar, but also have plenty of lessons to work with if you already have some foundational guitar skills. Hell, I’ve been playing for almost 20 years and this old dog picked up some tricks :-)

Overall, MyGuitarGuide.com readers have always ranked Jamorama very highly, and have had very positive feedback. We highly recommend Jamorama for newbies and intermediate guitar players. The cost is a one time fee of $49, payable via check, paypal, debit card, or credit card. You can buy with confidence, as they also include a no-questions-asked 60 day money back guarantee.
