Tuning is absolutely critical to playing guitar, and should be the first thing you do every time you pick up an instrument.

Over time, you will develop your ear and have the ability to tune well without relying on a tuner. But onstage or in the studio, you must have a tuner.

Nothing ruins the perfect take like an out of tune guitar, so take your time and do it right!

Check out this easy-to-use tuner. Unlike a lot of online tuners, once you “flip the switch” on a note it keeps playing that note until you switch it off. That way you can actually use both hands to tune the string. Sweet!

“Real World” Guitar Tuners

Of course, you don’t always have your laptop and MyGuitarGuide.com by your side, so at some point you’ll have to get a “real world” tuner.

Onstage I’ve always used a Boss TU2 Tuner… that thing was tough as nails! I remember dropping it and knocking it around all sorts of times, and that beast kept on rocking. Ha, I actually knocked most of the white paint off of it over the years but it never failed me.

In the studio I’ve had really good experiences with the Korg DTR1000 Chromatic Rackmount.
